[A study of electronystagmography (ENG) in clinical application].

gmus, which were simultaneously induced not only from bitemporal but also from horizontal and vertical components of each eye separately. Following results were obtained. 1) Pathological finding in spontaneous nysta' gmus test was 54%, in ENG test was 81%, in both of spontaneous nystagmus test and ENG test was 86%, on the other hand, 65% was abnormal in caloric test. It showed that abnormal findings in ENG test were higher recognized than those in caloric test. 2) Spontaneous nystagmus on straight gaze was positive in 23%, and when lateral gaze was added to straight gaze, it increased as high as 54%. Gaze direction nystagmus was positive in 17% of cases with peripheral lesion, and in 42% of central lesion. 3) Regular direction changing positional nystagmus of divergence type was not found in peripheral lesion. Other findings of horizontal positional nystagmus were not significant for localizated diagnosis. Vertical positional nystagmus was not only noticed in the central lesion but also in the peripheral lesion, especially in 4 cases among 8 cases of labyrinthitis. It was impossible in a simple test to differentiate whether rotating component or oblique type was mixed or pure vertical nystagmus was alone. 4) "Gegenlaufigkeit" was found in 17 cases among 70 with position changing nystagmus in horizontal plane. and one case of them was vertical nystagmus.
